FMD is a highly contagious viral disease.

Foot-and-Mouth Disease is the most significant biosecurity threat to Australia’s livestock industries. An outbreak could have devastating consequences for our community through lost production, trade and tourism.
Movement restrictions and response activities during an outbreak would also impede social interactions and affect the entire community.

Since May 2022, the Australian Government has been monitoring an outbreak of FMD in Indonesia, including the tourist destination Bali.

There is currently no Foot-and-Mouth Disease in Australia.

While there is no threat to human health from the disease, if there were an outbreak of FMD in Australia, the consequences for animal health and the trade of Australian Meat and Livestock would be significant.

It is important to remember that FMD is not the same as hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) that affects humans.
